THE AFT PERSPECTIVE

Participate with conviction.
Price uncertainty with discipline.

The opportunity for 2027 depends on the interaction of earnings, financing conditions and inflation. A strong growth story alone does not determine the return available at today’s price.

The central question for 2027

Risk appetite is the willingness to hold uncertain future cash flows and absorb temporary losses. It is not synonymous with economic growth. An economy can expand while equity valuations fall, credit spreads widen or leveraged positions face margin pressure. The relevant question for 2027 is whether earnings and income can compensate investors for financing costs, concentration and policy uncertainty.

Our working framework is conditional participation: assess opportunities where operating performance can justify the price paid, while retaining the capacity to withstand a less favorable path. This is an AFT interpretation of the public material reviewed below, not a consensus portfolio or a claim that the named institutions share one forecast.

What the institutional evidence supports

The source comparison separates publication date, institutional division and forecast horizon. The May and July outlooks establish earlier assumptions; the October publications provide more recent context. They should not be averaged into a single market target. In particular, a mid-2027 forecast and a year-end 2026 target do not answer the same question.

The selection below covers five public publications from four institutions. It is not a survey of all investment banks or a substitute for their complete research. The 2027 horizon in this report is an editorial framework built from material available by 25 October 2026; the sources are not all annual 2027 outlooks.

01

Goldman Sachs Asset Management

· October 2026 positioning; selected 2027 expectations

GSAM anticipates a modest acceleration in growth in 2027 as energy pressures ease. It favors higher-quality credit and selective AI exposure, while warning that abrupt yield increases can unsettle equities. Its discussion also distinguishes bond income from the reliability of bonds as a portfolio hedge.

AFT reading: growth can support risk appetite while the cost of financing remains a constraint. This is asset-management commentary, not a standalone Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research report.

Goldman Sachs · The Markets

· Near-term market discussion with visibility into 2027

In a discussion recorded on 22 October, European equities trading head Rich Privorotsky describes concentration, financing costs and power availability as pressure points for AI investments. The focus shifts toward revenue conversion and cash generation rather than capital spending alone.

AFT reading: financing quality deserves as much attention as thematic growth. These are a trading practitioner’s views; the source states that they may differ from Goldman Sachs’ institutional views.

Morgan Stanley Research

· 12-month outlook, including a mid-2027 equity target

Morgan Stanley presents a constructive equity outlook supported by earnings and AI infrastructure investment, while identifying energy disruption and additional corporate debt supply as risks. Its published S&P 500 target of 8,300 refers to mid-2027, not the end of 2027.

AFT reading: the earnings case and the financing case need separate assessment. This May publication provides historical context and an explicit 2027 horizon; it is not presented here as a freshly issued October forecast.

J.P. Morgan Global Research

· Primarily the second half of 2026; policy discussion extends into 2027

J.P. Morgan balances resilient activity and AI investment against sticky inflation and energy disruption. It remains constructive on equities but highlights crowded positioning and potential constraints on valuation multiples. Its midyear dollar stance is bullish; its published equity target is for year-end 2026.

AFT reading: an improving growth narrative does not automatically imply easier policy or a weaker dollar. The 2026 target is deliberately excluded from a comparison of 2027 return forecasts.

UBS Global Wealth Management · Chief Investment Office

· Weekly assessment with growth and policy expectations into 2027

UBS CIO expects continued global expansion and sees earnings supporting equities despite measured monetary tightening. It emphasizes diversified exposure and quality fixed income. Its October discussion also identifies funding demands within the AI buildout and higher energy costs as tests of market resilience.

AFT reading: participation in growth and resilience to policy surprises can be assessed together. This is a wealth-management CIO view, not UBS Investment Bank research.

Where risk appetite can change first

Earnings breadth. An index supported by a small number of large companies can conceal weaker conditions elsewhere. Compare earnings revisions, margin trends and cash conversion across sectors. Broader participation would make a growth narrative more resilient; a rally sustained mainly by expanding valuation multiples would leave less room for disappointment.

The cost of capital. Strong demand for investment funding can coexist with healthy aggregate activity. Examine interest coverage, debt maturities and dependence on new borrowing. A business with strong sales growth but persistent external funding needs may react differently to higher yields than a cash-generative competitor in the same industry.

Inflation and energy. A supply-driven energy increase can squeeze real incomes and margins while limiting the room for monetary easing. A demand-driven decline in oil can signal weakening activity. The same direction of a commodity price move can therefore have very different implications depending on its cause.

Positioning and liquidity. Diversification by ticker is insufficient when several holdings share the same financing, duration or currency exposure. Map common sensitivities across equity, credit, FX and derivatives. Liquidity that appears adequate in normal conditions may deteriorate precisely when several positions need reducing together.

AFT SCENARIO FRAMEWORK

Three ways 2027 could unfold.

Conditional illustrations of risk transmission. No probabilities, return targets or current market signals are assigned.

Broader expansion

Earnings participation improves, inflation pressure eases and refinancing remains orderly.

Equities
More support from earnings across sectors; valuation discipline still matters.
Fixed income
Income remains relevant; disinflation may improve the diversification role of duration.
FX & real assets
Relative growth and policy differences matter more than a universal dollar call.
Risk discipline
Challenge this scenario if profit revisions narrow or funding costs rise faster than operating returns.
Compare all three scenarios

Broader expansion

Earnings participation improves, inflation pressure eases and refinancing remains orderly.

More support from earnings across sectors; valuation discipline still matters. Income remains relevant; disinflation may improve the diversification role of duration. Relative growth and policy differences matter more than a universal dollar call.

Challenge this scenario if profit revisions narrow or funding costs rise faster than operating returns.

Inflation persistence

Energy or other input pressures spread into core prices and policy expectations move higher.

Higher discount rates and margin pressure can offset nominal revenue growth. Duration can fall alongside equities; weaker borrowers face greater refinancing pressure. Rate differentials and external energy exposure may dominate currency performance.

Stress correlated equity and bond losses, financing charges and a stronger funding currency.

Growth disappointment

Orders, cash conversion and earnings revisions weaken while credit conditions tighten.

Cyclical and highly financed businesses become more sensitive to earnings downgrades. High-quality duration may help if inflation also falls; credit risk remains separate. Liquidity demand can dominate carry; gold’s response depends partly on real yields and funding stress.

Test gaps, reduced liquidity and collateral needs; do not assume every defensive asset rises.

Translate the macro view into asset-specific questions

Equities: distinguish earnings delivery from valuation expansion. Monitor whether infrastructure investment translates into utilization, revenue and free cash flow. For cyclical businesses, test whether demand growth survives higher input and financing costs. Geographic diversification also requires attention to revenue exposure rather than listing location alone.

Fixed income: separate carry, duration and credit exposure. A higher starting yield can improve prospective income without removing mark-to-market losses. Government bonds may respond differently to a growth shock and an inflation shock, while corporate bonds add issuer and refinancing risks. Assess the function of each holding before assuming it will hedge equities.

FX, gold and commodities: evaluate relative policy paths, real yields, liquidity demand and the origin of supply shocks. Gold is not a guaranteed hedge in every sell-off. Currency carry can be overwhelmed by exchange-rate moves, and a futures position adds contract, rollover and margin considerations to the underlying macro thesis.

CFDs and other leveraged exposures: distinguish market direction from position survivability. A broadly correct annual view can still produce a forced exit during an adverse move. Financing charges, gaps, liquidity and variation in contract specifications belong in the scenario analysis alongside the expected price path.

A disciplined monitoring framework

Review growth, inflation, earnings, funding and market breadth together. Useful evidence includes purchasing managers’ surveys and new orders; core inflation and wage trends; earnings revisions and cash conversion; credit spreads and refinancing conditions; and participation across sectors and regions. These are monitoring categories, not a live data feed or a proprietary risk score.

Define what would change the thesis before increasing exposure. A benign inflation reading is more persuasive if funding conditions and earnings breadth also improve. Conversely, persistent inflation alongside weakening orders and widening spreads would challenge a constructive view even if headline GDP remains positive. Record the observation date and distinguish a single release from a sustained change.

Risk capacity should be assessed through liquidity needs, drawdown tolerance and financing obligations. Stress tests should examine simultaneous adverse moves rather than isolated price changes. The purpose is to understand the consequences of being wrong and preserve decision-making flexibility, not to manufacture confidence through precise-looking probabilities.
